How to Keep Sane During Quarantine

Unless you live under a rock, you know that practically the entire world is under quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic. Over a million cases have been confirmed across the globe and thousands continue to perish to this unknown disease. Medical professionals scramble to aid infected individuals while holding multiple lives in the balance.

Most of you are at home for a multitude of reasons, from work to educational purposes. Even more of you know people affected by COVID-19 and its silent spread across towns, cities, and public transport. Many of you are at home, out of work (like yours truly), and search for fulfillment in the midst of chaos. To keep your mental, physical, and psychological health in line, here are a few suggestions to keep yourself positively occupied:

1. Keep at work: For those not laid off, work is a sure-fire way not to become enveloped with the dark press on your smart phones, computers, and TV screens. You not only make money, but you also have professional security that makes you essential!

2. Spring cleaning: Being stuck from home can be a real drag, especially if your space is filthy! Now is a perfect time to clean your living space, which increases mental health and adds some feng shui to your psyche.

3. Learn a new language: Have you ever had a longing to learn a foreign tongue? Has your previous knowledge of another language gone away due to lack of exposure? No need for Rosetta Stone - learn any language on YouTube or DouLingo!

4. Get to lifting: I'm not saying that you will be the next bodybuilding great, but getting those endorphins going will relieve stress during a time like this. Walking around your neighborhood (WITH a face mask) or even making an in-home gym goes a long way! Aand, it isn't a bad time to break out those old Jane Fonda workout videos and DVDs!

5. Healthy eating: Being cooped up in the house makes for a dull existence. Diet is a BIG contributor to mental and physical health and affects various chemicals in the body. While indulging in that Snickers bar is never a bad thing every once in a while, eating junk food every day will show. Plan a meal for the day first, then set weekly goals so you place yourself on a healthy nutritional path.

I hope these help. Please stay safe and healthy!

#NeverForget

On this day 18 years ago, the largest attack on US soil occurred. Thousands of people lost their lives; our country lost its sense of unbreakable security. There had been no such foreign attacks in the 235 years prior to that day.

The Twin Towers, circa 2000 (photo courtesy of referencereference.com)

The irony is that this day started beautifully; a late summer's morning without a cloud in the sky. The time was a vital one for me: I just began my elementary school studies, making new friends and learning new subjects. My fellow classmates and I did not have a care in the world about anything - other than the latest pair of Adidas sneakers and the sharpest of crayons.

Little did we know that our sense of carelessness would vanish so quickly?

Only hours upon our entry into school, the principal announced that the nation was under attack. Just 15 miles away, over 2,500 civilians were killed by an incoming aircraft. My teacher's facial express read as if the attack happened right there in the classroom. Calamity filled the air as we sat in the classroom, infiltrated by pure and utter silence. The student worried about their parents, the teachers about their loved ones.

The rest of the day was a blur. Upon our arrival at home, my sister and I walked into the living room, where we saw both buildings of the World Trade Center in smoke. Our babysitter at the time cried uncontrollably as she viewed the debris and heared the screams from the 18-inch television screen. My mom frantically called our father to calm our worries and check in on him. He was in Atlanta with some business clients at the time, unable to fly back in New York. For over 24 hours, they had to drive back as all of the East Coast airports shut down, per the federal government's orders.

The following day, several of my classmates did not come into school. They and their families had to grieve for the their loved ones lost the prior morning. Even those who did not lose a family member felt the tragedy in some way, shape, or form. The events that transpired struck a chord with all 300 million Americans. Most of all, the country became vulnerable and broken.

Despite the animosity and chaos, the United States is still strong. New York City is still the greatest cultural, economic, political, and social hub in the world. As a native New Yorker, I carry a great sense of pride for my state, city, and country. Hold that pride, my readers, not just day, but every single day. We are not broken; we are stronger because of our bounce-back from such a horrible and unimaginable attack on humanity.

Thank you and much love,

PK

๐ŸŒˆThe Ultimate Pride 2019 Playlist!๐ŸŒˆ

๐ŸŒˆWhat's up, my pride?!๐ŸŒˆ
I know it's been a minute since my last post, but I am back with THE Pride 2019 Playlist bops for your next party, parade, or brunch/gossip sesh this month!

1. "I'm Coming Out" - Diana Ross

The legendary Miss Ross (courtesy of Getty Images)

This goes without saying: this pop-disco classic is the quintessential gay pride song! Miss Ross was much ahead of her time when she dropped this timeless hit in 1980. You want the world to know, you gotta let it show with the speakers blasting!

2. "Let's Get Loud" - Jennifer Lopez

J-to-the-Lo! (courtesy of Getty Images)

If you don't want to get up and dance at the strike of the song's first chord, you are NOT human! J.Lo's signature party song is one that will make you and your friends let go of any troubles by shaking your booty - and getting LOUD!

3. "Glamorous" - Fergie (feat. Ludacris)

Fergie Ferg! (courtesy of Getty Images)

This 7th grade dancefloor bop has not lost its magic, despite dropping over a decade ago. Fergie Ferg's lyrical hooks, coupled with Luda's rap skills, make you want to raise a glass - or bottle - or champagne before brunch even starts!

4. "Livin' la Vida Loca" - Ricky Martin

The King of Latin Pop at this year's Grammys! (courtesy of Getty Images)

This Latin-pop crossover classic was one of the biggest hits of the late 1990s. So much so that the media and audiences alike began to question the ever-sexy Martin's sexuality upon its reception within the gay community. Having come out (on my birthday) in 2010, the song holds its place as a bop that we all can shake our bon-bons to!

5. "Believe" - Cher

Cher is a triple threat - not to mention that she has a MUSICAL named after her! (courtesy of Getty Images)
An Oscar, an Emmy, and several Grammys to her credit doesn't even begin to describe the former Mrs. Sonny Bono's career. This club hit revolutionized mainstream pop for good with the use of auto-tune as well as becoming the epitome of a break-up and feel good song wrapped into one platinum-selling record - with a sequin bow, of course!

๐ŸŒˆIf you have any pride bop suggestions, leave a comment! Ta-ta for now!๐ŸŒˆ

An Ode to 24

Good afternoon, chicos and chicas! It is my 4th day as a 24-year-old and I must say, it has been a pretty stable year thus far. I say that now, but I am at a point in life during which I know what my end goals are: I am VERY excited to earn my master's degree this May, find a full-time job in New York, and surround myself with positive people. It was not a cake walk at all to get to this place, however; it was a road of personal growth and self-discovery that I had to go undergo (and I am still going through it, believe me you!). At the same time, it is one that I absolutely do not regret taking.

This being said, there comes a point in all our lives during which we question everything from religion to our political beliefs and our own interests. Does God actually exist? Do events in our lives reflect how we feel our government should structure itself? Do I like hip-hop or country music?

The point in writing this excerpt is that I want to ensure you that life is a constant journey of personal growth full of ups and downs and everything in between. It is a thing that has "I" in it, but also one that only YOU have sole control over. You may certainly be dealt a bad hand (shit happens); yet, in our mistakes, there is opportunity for redemption and reinvention. Through reinvention, we see ourselves through a different lens, waiting for the next challenge to come. With our friends, family, and our best selves by our sides.

So, this is to you, 24. I hope that being on the other side of 25 is as good as turning 13!

Hot Topics! Super Bowl Halftime Controversy, Wendy Williams Show Behind-the-scenes drama, Jussie Smollett's Assault Aftermath, and so much more!

Hey guys! It has been a while, but I am here with ALL the kafรฉ on the latest celebrity gossip!

Super Bowl Halftime Show Controversy!

First order of business - the Super Bowl Halftime Show this past Sunday - what a HOT MESS! While it wasn't particularly bad (in my opinion), it was lackluster compared to most previous shows (cough, cough, Lady Gaga). Not even Spongebob could save the night! Travi$ $cott performed his hit "Sicko Mode" upon his entry via comet/pyrotechnic effects and the crowd went wild, followed by a solo by the Georgia State University marching band. Then rapper Big Boi (of Outkast fame) performed "Kryptonite (I'm On It)" and "I Like the Way You Move" before Adam Levine closed with "Sugar" and "Moves Like Jagger", alongside Travi$.

Fans and critics alike swarmed social media to compare Levine's shirtless torso to the Chipotle brown paper bag and throwback bed sheets from Target. Let's not forget to mention the countless comparisons of his *voluntary* shirt removal to the *failed* stunt pulled by Janet Jackson AND Justin Timberlake on the same platform fifteen years prior. I do not consider the latter comparison to be fair due to the nature of the clothing removals; Levine's was voluntary and he knew what he was doing, whereas Janet and Justin pulled a stunt that went totally awry.

An ORIGINAL Pop Kulture meme!

Miss Jackson (if you're nasty) took the fall for the fiasco, to the point at which former CBS/Viacom boss Les Moonves blacklisted her music from all subsidiary radio stations. She was uninvited to the 2004 Grammys the following weekend; meanwhile, Justin attended that year's ceremony and won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("Cry Me a River") and Best Pop Vocal Album (Justified). Jackson's Damita Jo album received an RIAA platinum certification, but it was not enough to salvage the damage done to her career. Timberlake stated in an interview with MTV that he felt as though society did place a heavier blame onto Jackson due to her race, whether intentionally or not. This does deem true - looking back at past SBHT performances, there were stunts that left viewers at home and in the stadiums stunned - take for example, British recording artist MIA giving the middle finger during her act with Madonna and Nicki Minaj. Five-second delay or not, there must be an accountability factor to each performer on the country's biggest stage. And countless memes to follow!

Wendy Williams Show Drama!

What's goin' on with Wendy?! (photo from www.goodhousekeeping.com)

In the meantime in New York, there is a story that continues to grow each day due to increased speculation: the behind-the-scenes drama in the Wendy Williams Show studio! Now, before you guys get any ideas, I LOVE Wendy - she helped my get through some of the roughest times throughout the years, even when she was a radio DJ in the Empire State. Her comedic timing is iconic and her tea is always hot (and lemony!). But this is a story I must report in the name of love. Any-who, a series of panel hosts and Nick Cannon took her place during her absence to tell the latest in celebrity news and hot topics. I must say, they did a decent job, particularly Nick. He is a funny man at heart and knows how to work the audience solo. But I say decent because there is no one like the Queen of the Tea! There is no morning talk show host who is so open with her mess of a show and her crew (hey Suzanne and Norman!). This being said, the allegations of her husband, Kevin, or if you read/see outside sources, Kelvin, cheating on her, beating on her, and leaving her for his *alleged* pregnant mistress Shamira Hudson, piled up to the point to which fans want her to address the tea on HER life after all these years of dishing on everyone else's dirt. While Nick did give an update on her health, saying to studio and at-home audiences "not to get too comfortable...because she will be coming back", many still do not buy it.

Staff and production crew reportedly called those who ordered tickets to the upcoming shows to ensure that they will attend even though Wendy remains absent. Additionally, according to Lailah Lynn, WWS staffers are upset that Williams did not contact them regarding her condition in relation to their employment statuses. If Fox cancels the show, that leaves hundreds of producers and crew members out of a job left to scramble for another gig. And there's a rumor going around that Steve Harvey will replace Wendy on her time-slot; in ALL honesty, I do NOT think this should happen because of the two opposite natures of their personalities.

Photographers spotted the former shock jockette in South Florida only two weeks ago with no makeup and a "street wig" leaving a CVS with a friend. The reason for her being in FL more likely than not is her retired parents as well as her college-aged son living in the state. In the meantime, Kevin (or Kelvin, I cannot keep up), had the dirt spilled by his own MOTHER, Pearlet Hunter! Pearlet claimed that her son choke out her daughter-in-law and kicked the sh*t out of her on another occasion, according to blogger LoveBScott. I hope that all is okay in the Williams-Hunter kingdom and that our queen returns to her purple throne soon!

Jussie Smollett Assault Aftermath!

Jussie Smollett at an event for Empire (photo from www.out.com

This story is one that is very close to my heart, in terms of humanity and LGBTQ+ awareness. At around 2 a.m. on January 28th, Empire star Jussie Smollett faced a brutal attack in Chicago by two white men in ski masks. The two perpetrators came up behind Smollett, screaming "Are you that [expletive] Empire [expletive]?!", then tied a noose around his neck, kicked him, poured bleach on him, and left yelling "This is MAGA country!". Smollett then walked to the doctor immediately, then was admitted to the hospital that same night. The doctor discovered that he bruised his ribs and had cuts on his face. Not to mention the PTSD from this horrible act. This past weekend, he performed at the Troubadour in LA, addressing the incident and his strength through it all as he "fought the f**k back". He stated that he did not want to let [his assailants] win", making his appearance all the more important to his fans, the LGBTQ+ community, and the African American community. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a full supporter of the African American community, this attack is clearly a planned hate crime; Smollett received scathing hate mail while filming his hit show, with depictions of lynching alongside homophobic and racist profanities. In 2019, we HAVE to do better. Prayers, thoughts, and love to Jussie, his family, and the entire Empire cast.

21 Savage Gets Deported!

21 Savage at the MTV VMAs Red Carpet (photo from WGXA.com)

With this story, I learned that Atlanta-based rapper 21 Savage is actually British! All this time, myself, along with the public, believed that he was from the island of Dominica! But the "Bank Account" rapper hails from London, immigrating to the US when he was 12 years old, during which time he entered the country with a visa. Upon his arrival to the ATL, 21 (born Shรฉyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph) partook in a life of crime, from selling hard drugs to carrying unregistered weapons; I guess the name "savage" was literal! He began his rap career in the underground and Sound Cloud scene, with his debut mixtape The Slaughter Tape, followed by his single "Bank Account" as well as collaborations with fellow rappers like Drake ("Sneakin'"), Post Malone ("Rockstar"), Migos and Metro Boomin' (Without Warning), and Cardi B ("Bartier Cardi").

With his musical career soaring to the top of Billboard Hot 100 Charts and the Top Hip-Hop Singles Charts, he gained additional exposure via his links to Philly-born video vixen Amber Rose. Unfortunately, ICE ordered his deportation due to his residence without legal documentation, sparking outrage in the hip-hop world as well as various other celebrity circles. Many fellow artists posted the "Free 21 Savage" photo alongside the "#BlackLivesMatter" campaign in regards to his deportation, including rival raptresses Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Cardi posted on her Instagram that we has a society need to educate ourselves in regards to such issues affecting the black community and that 21 did not enter the US illegally. In the meantime, her beef with conservative political commentator Tomi Lahren cooks on! Lahren, donned the "White Power Barbie" (not my words), tweeted Sunday "I got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ICE agents ready to deport ya" (in reference to his "Bank Account" lyrics), to which the Bronxette replied 'Don't let me get my leash". Mhm! Crazy! I just hope that 21 Savage comes back to the US, earns an entertainment visa, or whatever visa for which is eligible, and brings the world together through his beats. Prayers to you, 21!

Liam Neeson in HOT water! Racist or nah?

Liam Neeson during a Good Morning America interview Tuesday morning (photo from www.cnn.com)

In this day and age, there are many sensitive subjects being brought to light, and race is no exception. Actor Liam Neeson described in a radio interview that he got into character for his role in the upcoming dramedy Cold Pursuit. During his press junket, he detailed his experience with dealing with a now-deceased female friend's vicious rape by man who happened to be a black man as well as a stranger. He stated that he "waited [outside of the pub with a club] for about a week" hoping that some black [person] would start a fight with him. Given that this incident was forty years ago, it was indeed ignorant of Neeson to say such a thing; however, he clarified in an interview with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America that he vented his frustration and would have done so regardless of the man's race.

Following the story, celebrities and civilians alike took to social media to deem Neeson a racist who did not understand the scope of what he said. Widows co-star Michelle Rodriguez supported his stance on the issue, stating that "this is [expletive]" and that his affection towards fellow co-star Viola Davis in the film proves that he is anything but a bigot. Neeson thankfully received the necessary help he needed with his family, friends, and his priest, who suggested he "power walk" for two hours a day, to which he attested significantly aided his rage over the issue.

Liam Neeson is an actor, thus requiring him to go to great lengths to get into character (method acting, anyone?). As an experienced performer, I can attest that you must get into your deepest emotions not only to act the part, but also BE the part. Neeson never condoned such ignorance or behavior and clarified his feelings and statements on several, very public platforms. He simply did his job to perform to the best of his potential and hopefully earn a lot of money on the film.

Stay tuned for ALL the latest in Hollywood dish! AND my next radio show is back on WED, 2/13 @ 10 PM ONLY ON TUNEIN! Check out the link in the "Live Radio Hour" page! :)

Resolution Revolution

As 2019 begins, we want to follow through with New Years resolutions, whether it be giving up something (i.e. cursing or smoking) or introducing new things into our lives (i.e. new cuisines, new styles, or attitude changes). In this day and age, it is almost impossible not to be so distracted that you forgot what you promised your "new year" self in the first place. Millennials pick up Sober January as if it's the newest Furla handbag, while on the other hand, those looking to boost their egos search for new purpose via community service endeavors. Regardless of the promises we make to ourselves, it is the promises with which we follow through that matter most.

So for this year, I will not view "resolutions" as things to completely eliminate or change; alternatively, I will intentionally change various aspects of my life for the better. I am young, single, and thriving and looking for my mark on the world. Goodbye to the days of lost promises and hello to the days of making conscious changes. Here I come, world, I'm moving onward and upward!

Hot Tea! VMAs shade - Nicki, Cardi, and Travis, oh my!

Sorry for the absence from the airwaves this week, my friends; but fret not, I will be back Wednesday (9/5) at 10pm to give you alll the dish in Hollywood, New York, and beyond!

Fendi prints ON! Minaj performing last Monday at the VMAs at Radio City Music Hall (photo courtesy of pitchfork.com)

Last week was nothing but notes - the VMAs on Monday started the week off with many feeling the *real* shade between Cardi B, Nicki, and Travis Scott - well, between Cardi and Nicki and Nicki and Travis.

Here's the backbeef - Cardi and Nicki have been at it for a while now, beginning with their “MotorSport” collab with Migos. Due to scheduling conflicts, the two female rappers could not film on the same days, thus forcing them to shoot their respective parts separately. It is *alleged* that Nicki rewrote her verse with ex-beau Saffaree after hearing Cardi’s part earlier in the song. In an interview with Beats 1 Radio, she wanted to clear the air regarding the "feud" with Quavo. In an exchange of texts with the Migos member, he stated that he would back her in the squabble “if [she] was his girl”. OUCH!

Cardi makin' money moves on the VMAs red carpet! (photo from vulture.com)

But back to the *main* Cardi/Nicki feud: Nicki stated that she “had the stats” to prove that she does not have to “buy” her number ones. Cardi stated that she will not “be discredited” for her lyricism and her hard work, proving itself on the charts and stage. To top off her night with the "Best New Artist of the Year" Award, along with winning both "Best Collaboration" ("Dinero") and "Song of the Summer" ("I Like It"), she made a dig at Minaj once again, stating that her fans' devotion "can't be bought, b*tch!" as she made a face. Sounds like the feud is far from over; both do not directly reference each other but they both seem to get under each other’s skin. In the meantime I’ll be waiting for their collabo...

If you wanna watch the FULL speech, check out this video, especially at 2:00! Take a look!

Lookin' regal! Minaj's album cover doesn't disappoint and perfectly fits her anticipated album and tour (photo courtesy of variety.com)
Travis and Nicki's beef have been on everyone's lips even before the awards show. In a series of Insta stories and tweets, Nicki called out Travis' team for "buying" his #1 album spot. While this may be true, the "stats" are there, Nicki; I have nothing but love for your music and undeniable talent, but the proof is in the charts! And it was reported that Travis and baby mother Kylie walked the red carpet separately to avoid the "Chun Li" rapper, taking their sits when she went backstage to prepare for her *killer* performance at the show!
